Man shot, killed
AKRON: A man sitting in a vehicle on Peerless Avenue in Northwest Akron was shot multiple times early Sunday and died at the hospital, authorities said.
Akron police and the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating the shooting as a homicide.
The victim’s name was not released pending a positive identification and notification of relatives, a spokesman for the medical examiner said.
Authorities said the shooting was reported at 4 a.m. The victim was taken to Akron General Medical Center and was pronounced dead at 4:24 a.m.
No details were available Sunday afternoon. A spokesman in the Akron Police Department detective bureau said he had no information to release.

Catholic event
AKRON: A buffet dinner and reverse raffle will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday by Catholic Charities Community Services of Summit County.
The event will be at the South Akron Knights of Columbus Hall, 2055 Glenmount Ave.

Tree planting
CUYAHOGA FALLS: The local chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution will dedicate a tree in High Bridge Glens Park on Front Street at 11 a.m. Saturday in honor of the group’s 90th anniversary.
DAR officers from around Ohio and local dignitaries will be on hand, along with the Garfield High School Junior Navy ROTC color guard.

CUYAHOGA VALLEY
Closings planned
The Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park will be closed to the public on Saturday and Sunday for the Towpath Marathon.
The trail from the Lock 39 Trailhead in Independence to the Botzum Trailhead in North Akron will be closed from dusk Saturday to 2 p.m. Sunday.
The trail will be used for the full marathon, a half marathon and a 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) run, all sponsored by the Ohio Canal Corridor.
All parking lots along the trail will also be closed to the public.
HUDSON
Candidates forum
HUDSON: The Hudson Economic Development Corp. is hosting a candidates forum on Thursday.
The event will be held at 8 a.m. at the Country Club of Hudson, 2155 Middleton Road.
Appearing will be most of the candidates for Hudson mayor, city council and the school board.
The moderator will be Hudson Hub-Times editor Bill Hammerstrom.

Free screening
STOW: Akron General Health System is offering free prostate screenings during a Know Your Stats event from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at its Health & Wellness Center-North, 4300 Allen Road, Stow.
To qualify, men must be uninsured or underinsured and between the ages of 40 and 75. Men who meet those criteria are eligible if they haven’t had a prostate screening within the last 12 months.
Prostate cancer survivor T.K. O’Grady, an on-air personality from WONE 97.5-FM, will be at the event to meet with participants.

Fracking meeting
PLAIN TWP.: The impact of horizontal drilling for natural gas and hydrofracturing, or fracking, will be the subject of a public meeting Sunday.
The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Oakwood Middle School, 2300 Schneider Ave. NE.
Speakers include Calvin Tillman, former mayor of Dish, Texas, a town featured prominently in the movie Gasland that is critical of drilling and fracking. Sponsors include Stark Concerned Citizens.
